Terms of use

By accessing or using LawZen, you signify that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by these Terms. If you are registering an account or claiming a profile on behalf of someone else (such as a law practice manager acting for a lawyer), you represent and warrant that you have their authorisation, and that the information you provide is accurate. Where the user is under the age of majority in their jurisdiction, they must have parental or guardian permission to use LawZen.

Use of certain features on LawZen, such as claiming or editing a lawyer profile, submitting reviews, or accessing Featured services, requires registration of an account. You agree to provide accurate and up-to-date information and to keep your account credentials secure. You are responsible for all activity that occurs under your account.

LawZen reserves the right to suspend or terminate any account at its discretion, including where there is suspicion or evidence of unauthorised access, false or misleading information, or breach of these Terms.

LawZen is for personal and informational use and for connecting the public with individual lawyers across Canada. You agree not to misuse LawZen or assist anyone else in doing so. Prohibited conduct includes, but is not limited to:

- Scraping, data mining, bulk copying, using automated means to access, extract, or download content, or reproducing or republishing any part of LawZen without written authorization from the LawZen Team.

- Uploading, submitting, or transmitting content that is abusive, harassing, defamatory, obscene, illegal, infringes intellectual property, or violates the rights of any person.

- Impersonating any person or entity or misrepresenting affiliation with any lawyer, law firm, or organization.

- Interfering with or disrupting the security or performance of LawZen or attempting to gain unauthorised access to LawZen, accounts, servers, or networks connected to LawZen.

- Using LawZen for unlawful purposes or to promote or facilitate illegal activities.

LawZen compiles lawyer profiles based on publicly available information. Profiles displayed on the site do not imply endorsement. Lawyers may claim and update their own profiles at no cost to ensure information is up to date and accurate. Claiming a profile, verifying an email address, verifying a business email, selecting or installing a badge, or making any payment does not confer ownership of the profile. Ownership is granted only by the LawZen Team after manual review.

Profile information may include publicly available contact details, qualifications, languages, practice areas, and links to third-party sites. It is each lawyer’s responsibility to ensure that information associated with their claimed profile is accurate and remains relevant.

Profiles remain listed as free, unclaimed profiles unless and until claimed and/or granted ownership status following LawZen Team review.

All lawyer profile ownership is controlled and assigned by the LawZen Team following a manual review process. The decision to grant ownership is solely at the discretion of the LawZen Team, regardless of whether the claimant has claimed, verified, paid for services, or otherwise identified themselves. LawZen reserves the right to decline any ownership assignment, and to transfer or revoke ownership as necessary to ensure information accuracy, compliance, and integrity of the directory.

LawZen may offer badges (such as Claimed, Verified, or Featured) for display on profiles. Use of badges is permitted only as provided through LawZen. Badges must not be copied, altered, misrepresented, or used in a misleading manner, including suggesting any approval, partnership, or endorsement by LawZen beyond the factual state conveyed by the badge. Badges may be removed or disabled by the LawZen Team at any time and for any reason, such as misuse or profile inaccuracy.

LawZen offers a Featured presence product, available only to individual lawyers, which provides a visually enhanced listing and priority placement above standard results on relevant listing pages. Featured presence is available for a minimum twelve-month renewable term, and becomes active only upon full payment processed securely by Stripe. Payments are not automatically renewed; you are responsible for any renewal at the end of each term. LawZen does not store your payment card details.

Featured placement does not alter standard search results or algorithmic sorting among non-Featured profiles. LawZen reserves the right to label all Featured profiles clearly and to adjust visual presentation or duration of Featured status at its discretion, subject to the minimum term.

Refunds for Featured presence are available only at the discretion of the LawZen Team and typically limited to proven cases of error or service unavailability. Cancellations may be requested at any time via the contact page, but cancellation does not automatically result in a refund. The LawZen Team evaluates refund requests case by case and may request additional information as needed.

Only Featured profiles display an enquiry (contact) form, which members of the public may use to request contact or information. LawZen makes no warranty as to the number or quality of enquiries, and the use or mis-use of such forms by any party is subject to these Terms. LawZen does not review or pre-screen the content of initial public enquiries. Abuse may result in restriction, suspension, or removal of profile features.

LawZen displays reviews from Google and accepts reviews submitted directly on LawZen. Google reviews are provided as they appear on Google and LawZen cannot edit, remove, or alter them in any way. LawZen-submitted reviews must be based on genuine interactions and relevant to the services provided by the lawyer. LawZen moderates these reviews only to remove abusive, spam, or clearly off-topic content. LawZen never writes or invents reviews, credentials, awards, or verification for any lawyer.

Lawyers and members of the public who wish to flag a review for moderation may do so through the contact page. However, LawZen has sole discretion to determine when content violates moderation policies and when removal is appropriate.

All original content, code, logos, graphics, and design elements on LawZen are proprietary to LawZen or its licensors and protected under Canadian and international copyright and trademark laws. You may view, download, and print content from LawZen for personal, non-commercial use only. Any other use, reproduction, or distribution is prohibited without written permission from the LawZen Team.

If you submit content to LawZen, including but not limited to profile details, reviews, or badges, you grant LawZen a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, perpetual licence to use, display, reproduce, modify, adapt, and publish that content for the purpose of providing, promoting, and improving LawZen services. You represent and warrant that you have all rights necessary to provide such content and that it does not infringe the rights of any third party.

LawZen may, at its sole discretion, suspend, limit, or terminate your access to LawZen or any features at any time without prior notice, including if you breach these Terms or for any other reason deemed necessary to protect the integrity or operation of LawZen. Suspension or termination does not entitle you to any refund unless determined appropriate by the LawZen Team. Upon termination, your access to your account and related services may be discontinued and all content submitted by you may be removed or retained at the sole discretion of LawZen.

LawZen is an informational platform operated as a directory and is not a law firm or a provider of legal advice. Your use of LawZen does not create a lawyer-client relationship with LawZen or with any lawyer listed on the site. Information on LawZen is provided for general informational purposes only and may not reflect the latest changes in law or practice. You are solely responsible for verifying the credentials, suitability, and accuracy of information of any lawyer prior to engaging their services.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, LawZen and its employees, agents, and contractors disclaim all warranties, representations, and conditions regarding LawZen, including implied warranties of fitness, merchantability, and non-infringement. LawZen is not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, punitive, or consequential damages, including loss of profits, goodwill, or data, resulting from your use of or inability to use LawZen, even if advised of the possibility of such damages.

You agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless LawZen, its officers, directors, employees, agents, licensors, and suppliers from and against all losses, expenses, damages, claims, fines, penalties, and costs, including reasonable legal fees, resulting from (a) your breach of these Terms; (b) your misuse of LawZen; (c) your violation of any applicable law or the rights of a third party when using LawZen.

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Canada and the province or territory in which the services are provided or accessed. You agree to submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of that province or territory for the resolution of any disputes arising under or in connection with these Terms.

LawZen reserves the right to modify these Terms at any time. Any changes take effect when posted to LawZen. It is your responsibility to review these Terms regularly. Continued use of LawZen after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms. If you do not agree to the updated Terms, you must stop using LawZen.
