Legal Aid Services of the NWT

Legal Aid Services of the Northwest Territories provides confidential legal services, advice, and representation to residents of the NWT who are unable to afford a lawyer. Based in Yellowknife, the service is administered by the Legal Aid Commission through the Department of Justice, Government of the Northwest Territories. Lawyers working through this program represent clients in a variety of matters with a primary focus on criminal defence, including charges under the Criminal Code and Youth Criminal Justice Act, as well as related family and child welfare cases. The program covers representation for criminal defence and related areas such as child custody, child support, spousal support, division of property, and certain appeals where financial eligibility is met. Full-service legal aid is available for more serious legal issues including cases that may result in jail time, loss of livelihood, or complex family disputes. Services are designed to ensure access to justice for all residents, regardless of financial status. With walk-in clinics and outreach services available, Legal Aid Services of the NWT remains committed to providing accessible legal support within the territory.
