I cannot recommend James Alvarez and the team at TaxCounsel highly enough! Dealing with a complex Canada Revenue Agency dispute was incredibly stressful, but from our very first consultation, James provided absolute clarity, realistic expectations, and very clean strategy to protect my rights. Thanks to his expertise, flawless execution of a Judicial Review application, and the second review with CRA, the CRA completely reversed their decision and cleared my file. If you are facing an administrative battle with the CRA, do not hesitate to hire this firm and James Alvarez specifically. We initially retained Chad hoping for guidance with a complex tax matter. Unfortunately, our experience did not meet expectations. One of the biggest challenges was communication. Calls often dragged on far longer than necessary because the same points were repeated multiple times, often without providing any new insight. After each conversation, we left feeling frustrated, as the discussions frequently went in circles without real progress or clarity. Many legal questions were also answered with hesitation or uncertainty, which left us feeling uneasy. This was surprising from someone who claims regular experience with tax audits. After consulting another lawyer, the difference was stark: they were more experienced, knowledgeable, and communicated with far greater clarity and confidence. Because of this, we decided to end our services with Chad, as he was unable to meet our expectations and consistently left us feeling more stressed and frustrated. Based on our experience, we would not recommend this lawyer. Additionally, I found it unprofessional to see client case details being shared in responses to some of the reviews posted here *Response to your reply: I’m genuinely surprised by the misleading response to my review. At no point did we ask for or expect a full refund, as you claimed. We said on the phone we didn’t expect a full refund. In fact, this is what clearly stated in our email as well. “We still wanted to be fair and compensate you for your time, but we do not believe the $2,500 fee reflects the actual value of the work provided. Much of the advice felt inconsistent, repetitive, and lacking clarity, which left the impression of inexperience. We’re genuinely surprised that you won’t be refunding any portion of the retainer, and unfortunately, we feel obligated to share our experience on Google.” Being billed while the lawyer researched answers to fairly standard tax law questions—was not a good use of our time or money. It was frustrating to feel like we were funding their learning curve. Based on the review posted right before ours, it seems we’re not the only clients who had this experience. To be honest, if you had refunded even just $500 as a gesture of good faith to acknowledge that you weren’t fully equipped to handle our case as you originally expected, we would have appreciated that.

James was friendly, knowledgeable and totally honest with us. He was extremely supportive and compassionate and made us feel comfortable. He answered all our questions with great detail and was always prompt in getting back to us. James was extremely helpful and completely straightforward in offering a number of options to help resolve our issue. We would highly recommend James and this firm without hesitation and are extremely grateful for his time and help.
