  I completed a real estate transaction with Peter B. Mason Real Estate Lawyer in 2022. My goal was to structure the ownership in a way that would avoid probate, but as someone without legal expertise, I didn’t know what I didn’t know and relied on the professionals involved to guide me. My intention was to take on the mortgage myself while having both names on the title. When I noticed that only my name appeared on the title documents, I asked about it before signing. I was reassured that it was not an issue because Alberta’s dower rights would protect my wife. Based on that explanation, I proceeded. I later learned—after taking time to educate myself on financial literacy and estate planning—that this setup was not the most tax‑efficient or probate‑efficient structure for my goals, nor was I advised to redo the paperwork to reflect my original instructions. I only recently became aware of the long‑term implications, which is why I am sharing this now. I am now working through the process of correcting this, and it has created complications I didn’t anticipate at the time. I’m sharing this experience so others can ensure their instructions are fully confirmed and that they receive complete guidance on the long‑term implications before closing. I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss this matter with the firm to explore whether there is a fair and supportive way to help resolve the issue, given the circumstances and the guidance I relied on at the time.

  Met Peter on another matter a year or so ago and was very happy to have chosen him as my lawyer when I needed a real estate matter taken care of.
